What is Imago Relationship Therapy?
Imago therapy, Imago Relationship Therapy imago partner therapy is a type of therapy that helps improve relationships. It is intended to create and promote opportunities for healing and growth. Imago means image, and here it is intended to express the existence of an image in the unconscious of what family love is.
Imago Relationship Therapy was developed in the 70s by Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt. They created two approaches: for relationships and for individuals. The central idea is that people develop an idea of love and their own position within their relationship based on their early relationships. This is reflected in their attachment patterns, in what they have to do to feel safe or to gain love, and in how they deserve to be treated by the people around them. Imago gives the person the opportunity to heal and change these patterns within a new committed relationship.
Imago Therapy of relationships works in different ways. One of the techniques is the imago dialogue. Here, the therapist facilitates a conversation between partners to understand each other, remove offensive language, and create a safe and equal environment for communication. During this dialogue, partners are taught specific ways of communicating, such as mirroring (repeating what the other person says to clarify and demonstrate understanding), validation (offering validation of the partner’s emotions and experiences), and empathy (sharing what one partner thinks the other may be experiencing).

This type of therapy is designed to help people work through relationship challenges, such as conflict, poor communication, dissatisfaction, feelings of distance, building intimacy, and more. Its primary goal is to enable the couple to find better ways to experience their relationship. On an individual level, Imago is designed to help a person change their self-image and develop new patterns for all of their relationships, healing from negative early experiences that leave lasting consequences.
Imago therapy can resolve problems in existing relationships or help a couple achieve greater satisfaction and better communication. It doesn’t necessarily focus on the negative aspects, but it can also help people nurture an already working relationship to make it even better.
Relationship image therapy has been around for several decades and seems to have good results as a form of couples therapy. One particular strength is that it goes beyond what is happening in the moment, within the relationship. It also seeks to improve underlying patterns of behavior, beliefs, and feelings of self-worth that may be negatively affecting the person. This is a learning experience that can benefit the individual in other relationships throughout their lives.
Therapy is available through couples therapists, and can also be attended through workshops. It is a fairly friendly approach that promotes skills such as listening and empathy, useful for any type of relationship.
