Somatic Experiencing Therapy – Mind, Body, and Emotions
Somatic Experiencing Therapy (SET) is a therapeutic approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and emotions. This method focuses on the somatic or bodily experience of an individual, as it is believed that the body contains memories, emotions, and sensations that can be released through the therapeutic process.
Trauma is a significant factor that can influence an individual’s somatic experience. Trauma can leave its mark on the body, manifesting as physical symptoms such as chronic pain, digestive problems, and other chronic illnesses. Suppressed anger and other emotions can also have a significant impact on the body, leading to chronic illnesses such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Psychologically, trauma can affect the brain’s ability to regulate emotions and stress responses. Traumatic experiences can change the structure and function of the brain, leading to an increased stress response and a reduced ability to regulate emotions. This dysregulation can lead to physical symptoms such as rapid heart rate, sweating, and muscle tension. Over time, chronic activation of the stress response can lead to chronic illness.
When emotions are repressed, they can lead to chronic stress and tension in the body, resulting in physical symptoms such as chronic pain and digestive problems. Additionally, when emotions are repressed, they can build up over time, leading to explosive outbursts and further dysregulation of the body’s stress response.
Neurologically, chronic stress can affect the immune system, leading to inflammation and autoimmune disorders. Chronic stress can also affect the digestive system, leading to increased intestinal permeability, which can allow harmful substances to enter the bloodstream and trigger further inflammation and autoimmune reactions.
A Somatic Experience Therapy therapist works with an individual to help them connect with their somatic experience and release stored emotions and trauma from the body. This process can help regulate the body’s response to stress and reduce chronic stress and tension, leading to a reduction in physical symptoms and improved overall health.
Somatic experience therapy involves a combination of talk therapy and body-centered techniques to help individuals identify and release stored emotions and trauma from the body. The therapist may use techniques such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, and touch exercises to help the individual connect with their physical sensations and emotions.
By focusing on the present moment and connecting with their body, the individual can develop a greater sense of awareness and understanding of their emotions and how they affect their physical health. The therapist may also work with the individual to identify patterns of tension and discomfort in the body, which may be indicative of stored emotions and trauma.
Through the therapy process, the individual can learn to regulate their emotions and reactions to stress, leading to a reduction in chronic stress and tension. This can have a positive impact on physical health.
It is important to note that SET is not a substitute for medical treatment and should be used in conjunction with medical care. Chronic illnesses require medical intervention, and individuals should work with their physician to develop a comprehensive treatment plan.
