Spirituality – The power of faith and/or spirituality in the psychotherapy process
In the life of every human being, there inevitably comes a time when one faces challenges that seem insurmountable. Then the inner strength that carries us forward is key, and one of the most important sources of this strength lies in faith. Faith, in the broadest sense, does not have to be directed towards a specific religion or deity; it can be based on belief in one’s own abilities, universal order, a higher purpose, or even hope for a better tomorrow. In the context of personal growth and the healing process, faith plays a vital role because it provides a framework for understanding pain and a path to the development of meaning.
Faith as a shield in times of crisis
When we are faced with a crisis, the feeling of helplessness can paralyze us. In such moments, faith acts as a beacon that directs us to the way out of the darkness. Regardless of whether we believe in God, higher intelligence, cosmic energy or simply in the inner desire for self-actualization, this faith provides hope. Hope is not just an abstract concept; it is a driving force. It enables us to see the bigger picture and consider the possibility of change even when our current situation leads us to believe otherwise.
Hope is a key component of any successful therapeutic process. When a person loses hope, they lose the motivation to change, to move forward, to fight. Faith, on the other hand, preserves hope. Belief in the possibility of a better tomorrow, in our own resilience, or in something greater than ourselves, gives us emotional stability. It reminds us that we are part of a bigger plan, part of a world that makes sense, even if at times it seems to be losing its way.
Believe in yourself, but also in others
Believing in your own abilities is the ideal to which we should all strive. When a person recognizes that they have strength within themselves, they become capable of facing any challenge. However, it is not always easy to maintain this faith, especially during difficult times. That is why it is useful to have a source of faith – something we can turn to when our own strength fails us. This could be God, an angel, guardian, the universe, nature, or even the collective energy of the people around us. This belief provides the feeling that we are not alone, that there is something or someone supporting and guiding us.
The Cosmic “Me” and Transcendence
Spirituality for many people, and the idea of a higher self, represents a path to transcendence. This can be defined as an inner wisdom that transcends the ego, a connection with the universe or simply a feeling of connection with something greater than one’s own problems. When we feel this connection, the problems that have beset us may seem less significant, and the perspective we gain may encourage us to act with greater clarity and decisiveness.
Faith in any form is not a luxury; it is a necessity for the human being who seeks meaning. It is a bridge between struggle and recovery, between darkness and light. It enables us to strive, to pick ourselves up when we fall and to find opportunities for growth in times of crisis. Whether it is directed inwards, towards our own power, or outwards, towards a higher power, faith enables us to believe in the possibility of change. It leads us to hope, and hope is, after all, the most important step towards fulfillment.
